How Much is a Superyacht for Sale?

As a one-stop shop specializing in yacht pricing consulting, trading, transportation and maintenance, Yachttrading is often asked “How much is a superyacht for sale?” This question. Superyachts represent the ultimate in luxury and are an outstanding example of modern engineering. To fully understand how much a superyacht costs, it is important to look at not only the purchase cost, but also the day-to-day operation and maintenance costs. Let's take a closer look at the cost of a superyacht to help you get a clearer picture of this luxury investment.

Superyachts on the sea

How Much is a Superyacht for Sale?

Superyachts span a wide range of prices, from small superyachts of about 80 feet (about 24 meters) to megayachts of more than 500 feet, each with a different market niche. As an example, the Azzam, currently the largest yacht in the world, is 590 feet long and cost about $600 million, while Roman Abramovich's Eclipse is 533 feet long and cost about $700 million to build. In addition, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' yacht Koru is 417 feet long and cost about $500 million.

There's a simple formula in the industry to estimate how much a superyacht costs: for every 3.3 feet of additional length, a superyacht costs about $1 million more to build. Using this calculation, a custom yacht of around 100 feet would roughly cost around $30 million. However, this figure fluctuates depending on the difference between fully customized and semi-customized. Many brands, such as Princess Yachts and Sunseeker, offer options for personalized configurations based on standard hulls, and these types of semi-custom superyachts are relatively affordable, with 130-foot semi-custom yachts costing between $12 million and $15 million, or roughly half the price of a fully custom boat.

If the pre-owned market is considered, mid to large superyachts can be found for around $20 to $30 million. Older 90-footers that are 15 to 20 years old are relatively affordable at around $1.5 million to $2.5 million.

Operating Costs After Buying a Superyacht

Buying a superyacht is only the first step, it is the running costs that are often the bigger burden. Industry estimates put the annual operating costs of a superyacht at around 10% to 12% of the price of the yacht, but as yachts have become larger and more complex, this percentage has climbed to nearly 20%. There are six types of costs associated with running a superyacht:

Fuel costs: superyachts consume a staggering amount of fuel. For example, a 230-foot yacht sailing at 20 knots can cost as much as $2,000 per hour in fuel. A smaller 150-foot yacht uses about 150 gallons of fuel per hour and costs about $500. For 500 hours of travel per year, this translates to more than $250,000 in fuel expenses.

Supplies: Everything from food and beverages to water recreation equipment needs to be purchased to a high standard. A jet ski alone can cost between $5,000 and $20,000, making the overall cost of supplies considerable.

Berthing costs: Yachts are expensive to moor, especially in popular marinas. Superyacht berthing fees can be as high as $4,000 per night and can cost up to $350,000 per year, making it a significant part of operating expenses.

Crew salaries: Superyachts require a team of professional crew, ranging from a few to more than 70 people, from the captain to the chef and mechanics. Taking a 150-foot yacht as an example, the total annual salary of the crew is about $800,000, accounting for about 45% of the operating costs.

Maintenance and upkeep: Superyachts are subject to year-round maintenance, especially the top tier megayachts. For example, the Azzam's annual maintenance costs are estimated to be as high as $60 million. Smaller yachts are less expensive, but regular inspections and repairs can still cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Insurance and management costs: The annual insurance premium for a 150-foot superyacht is around $73,000, and with the addition of day-to-day management and administration costs, the overall cost of running a superyacht continues to escalate.

To answer the question “How much is a superyacht for sale?” The actual figure for this question goes far beyond the purchase price itself. Depending on the size and degree of customization, a superyacht can cost anywhere from tens of millions of dollars to hundreds of millions of dollars to build, and the annual operating costs can be almost 20% of the purchase price. This means that to own a superyacht you not only need to be financially strong, but also well prepared for long-term maintenance and operation.
